Jet Fuel and Diesel Fuel Differences

Jet fuel and diesel fuel may appear similar on the surface—both are refined from crude oil and used to power engines—but they are fundamentally different in composition, performance, and application. Understanding the distinctions between the two is valuable for safety, efficiency, and compliance in fuel-related operations.

Composition and Refinement

Diesel fuel, frequently used in trucks, buses, heavy equipment, and generators, is a heavier fuel distilled at higher boiling points. It typically contains a blend of hydrocarbons, additives, and detergents. Diesel fuel is divided into two main types: on-road (ULSD or Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel) and off-road diesel (dyed red and used for equipment not operated on public roads).

Jet fuel, by contrast, is a kerosene-based product with a lighter composition. The two most common types are Jet-A (used in the U.S.) and Jet-A1 (used internationally). Jet fuel must meet strict performance standards to operate in high-altitude, low-temperature environments. It has a lower freezing point and is carefully refined to remove contaminants and water that can freeze or disrupt fuel systems.

Performance Requirements

The primary performance difference lies in the operating environment. Jet fuel is designed to remain stable at extreme altitudes and must be free of particulates and water to prevent freezing or fuel system failure. Diesel fuel, on the other hand, is designed for engines that operate at ground level and are more accommodating in temperature ranges.

Additives and Handling

Diesel fuel often contains lubricity agents, anti-gel additives, and detergents to improve engine performance and extend engine life. Jet fuel includes static dissipaters and corrosion inhibitors to reduce electrical charge buildup and protect aircraft systems.

Applications

Diesel is used in land-based transport and industrial applications, while jet fuel is strictly for aviation. Mixing or misapplying these fuels can cause severe damage and is never advised. Each requires specific storage, handling, and transfer protocols.

Cost and Availability

Jet fuel is typically more expensive due to its refinement process and stricter quality controls. However, both fuels are widely available in commercial markets, with dedicated suppliers and infrastructure.

While jet fuel and diesel fuel share some characteristics, they can provide very different roles and must be handled with specific knowledge and care. Understanding their differences is essential for anyone working in transportation, logistics, or fuel management.
